Fans of Buckminster Fuller might know him for his daring and dynamic geodesic dome designs – but did you know he was also a proponent of polyphasic sleep, taking just four thirty-minute naps a day for nearly two years? He really could have used one of these outfits.

Designed by Forrest Jessee for the bustling non-stop lifestyle of contemporary cosmopolitans, this urban sleep suit is a take-anywhere, nap-anytime ensemble made to be slept in on the spot. Who has time for wake-up and quiet-down rituals with only a few short sleep cycles a day?

The overlapping layers are engineered to be a combination of structurally supportive, flexible and comfortable, providing a sense of stable security as well as an all-around cozy sleeping environment. Other factors such as the need for regular air flow, temperature regulation and varying degrees of protection and comfort along different points of the body were also considered in the creation of this one-of-a-kind combination sleeping bag and clothing product.

Humidify Your Home for Increased Winter Comfort [Health]

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 21:30

If it seems like your skin is dryer, you get zapped with static shocks more often, and you wake up frequently with a stuffy nose, you're not just imagining things—you're experiencing the effects of low humidity.Photo by dolapo.
Even if you live in an area that has hot and humid summers, the drop in temperature that accompanies winter sucks the moisture right out of the air. Decreased moisture has a host of negative side effects ranging from increasing your chances of getting a cold or sinus infection—dry respiratory tissue is more susceptible to irritation and infection—to the paint and wood work in your home cracking from lack of moisture.
Over at the home-centered blog Re-Nest they've put together a guide to identifying whether your home is too dry, just right, or overly humid and what you can do to remedy a deficiency or excess of moisture. For those of you in a winter climate right now you can add moisture back into your homes in methods ranging from free and sort-of-effective to pricier and quite effective. The cheapest method they highlight is simple evaporation:

Adding moisture to the air is as simple as placing a vessel of water on top of, or next to, a radiator (or other air heating system). Leaving wet towels and clothes out to dry are other ways to introduce moisture into the air. This is a very low-tech and low power method, however the strength and humidity controls are limited, and available moisture is dependent on the size of the vessel used, and must be frequently refilled.

If you've ever looked at a vase of flowers in January and sworn you just filled it up with water and it needs a refill again, you're seeing just how thirsty the dry winter air in your home really is. More effective are stand alone and whole house humidifiers that mechanically inject moisturized air into individual rooms and the entire heating system of a home, respectively.
If you're debating whether or not it's worth investing effort into increasing the humidity of your home, I recently repaired the whole-house humidifier attached to my furnace and fired it up. Using it raised the humidity levels in my home from around 28-30%—as measured by the hydrometers I placed throughout the house—to a nice comfortable 42-45%. The difference is noticeable in everything from how the air feels when you breathe it in to how you don't get shocked petting the cats or getting dressed anymore.

Jersey Shore Season Finale Recap: "That's How the Shore Goes"

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 20:54

All good things must come to an end. So, too, must the first season of Jersey Shore, and The Hollywood Gossip has all the action recapped below as only we can.
Last night's ninth and final episode of the MTV hit's inaugural run was somewhat subdued and sentimental (seriously), which wasn't a bad thing. Let's get to it:
Pauly D's girl says the gang is "acting like Israelis." Vinny's reply: "Israelis are like [machine gun noises, gestures]." Equal opportunity stereotypes! Minus 3.
Vinny, Pauly D, and Mike head out for some male bonding. Plus 4, because this surprisingly normal behavior makes them actually look like chill dudes. Almost.
Sammi bails Ronnie out of jail after his latest fight. They hug. He says he's not sorry he hit the guy, only that he got caught, blah, blah, we're bored. Minus 5.
Upset over guys, Snooki decides to dance away the pain. Solo. In broad daylight. People stare as if this were the first Oompa Loompa in a white, leopard print mini dress they've ever seen break it down in front of a camera crew. Plus 6.

One-woman dance party. Snooki stizzyle.
Pauly D: "We stayed boys throughout this whole thing. This bond that we shared brings us together and no one can ever take that away from us, ever. Like, we take that with us for life, this bond ... That was deep." It sure was. Plus 4.
Sammi and Ronnie go out on a date, "somewhere out of Seaside ... getting away from it all." In Belmar, an even trashier location 17 miles up the coast. Minus 3.
The pair toasts each other and their future, post-Shore. Actually kinda sweet. Plus 2.
Poor Snooki whines about guys some more. Geez, give it a rest, girlfriend, Minus 7.
We learned last night that Vinny thinks Pauly D is "ridiculously, ridiculously good looking." Pauly D's look to the camera said it all. He's the ultimate guido! Plus 9.
Snooki and The Situation go hot-tubbing. We're scared for what's coming. Minus 5.

The Situation and Snooki suck face. We're as grossed out as you.
Revolting as watching Snooki maul The Situation might seem, he was actually being genuinely nice to her, before, during after making out. Plus 6 for his sensitive side.
Mike: "Next thing you know, Snooks' clothes just started coming off!" No no no no no. Fortunately, he puts a stop to it, because they're like siblings, so only Minus 3.
Cue season-ending montage:. Fights. Hook-ups. Pickles. Abs. Fights. Hair spray. Fist-pumping. Fights. Hot tub action. Arrests. Laughs. Fights. The Situation. Plus 5.
TOTAL: +10! SEASON: +56! We're ready for a break from the Shore, but we also can't want for it to return. Follow the link for a full season of Jersey Shore quotes!

Amber Rose and Kanye West: Friends with Fur

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 20:35

Excuse us, Kanye. We're gonna let you wear that outfit, but we just have to say:
Fur is one of the all-time worst things you can wear. One of the all-time worst!
The rapper and weird girlfriend Amber Rose have ignored the pleas of naked, D-list celebrities everywhere and continued to don their animal-murdering coats.
Earlier this week, they were spotted in these outfits at the Louis Vutton fashion show in Paris. The killing of God's creatures aside, the attire simply looks ridiculous, doesn't it? Chime in with your take below...

What do you think of Kanye and Amber's coats?

Evernote 3.5 for Windows Released, Introduces Better Interface [Downloads]

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 20:30

Windows: Evernote's desktop software does a good job at clipping screenshots, scribblings, and as-you-think text into your cloud-connected second brain, but didn't look so hot doing it. Evernote 3.5 upgrades the note views, and also improves your search powers. The main thing existing Evernote users will notice about the upgrade are the three views offered for looking at notes: List, Mixed, and Thumbnails, and, while Thumbnails is new to Windows, they all look a bit better than before. If a note has geo-location tags, a map slides into place to show its location. On the whole, the interface feels a lot more Windows 7 than Windows 98.
More useful than just looks, though, the search database has been improved, and you can save and edit your search filters. Spell check goes multi-language in this version, and, having been in beta tests since September, it's a safe bet that a good number of bugs have been worked out.
Evernote 3.5 is a free download for Windows systems. If you've been beta testing it, or already found something to like or loathe about it, tell us about it in the comments.

What Are Your Go-To Recipes for Multiple Meals? [Ask The Readers]

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 19:30

Everybody's got it—that recipe that makes a lot of food, and still tastes good, or even better, the next day, and the day after that. We're wondering what recipes of yours save time, taste great, and impress friends.Photo by New York Times.
Sam Sifton writes in the New York Times about a beef roast that makes a hearty Saturday dinner, then transforms to a hash breakfast the next morning, perfect with eggs and ketchup. It's a meal with multiple rewards, and you're not sick of eating it after one or two go-rounds. It sits right next to crockpot chicken tacos as the kind of meal we wish we made more often, rather than chase down ornate gourmet recipes that go stale in the fridge.
So! Inspired by Sifton's description of a perfect double-purpose meal, we're wondering what roasts, stews, barbecues, or other dishes are among the most economical in your recipe file. What lasts as a leftover? What can be converted into a different menu idea? What stretches a cheap piece of meat a long way?
Please, trade your tips, recipes, links, and suggestions in the comments. The weekend's coming up, and we're all looking to put in a little less effort.

Bristol Plain Wants a Piece of Levi Johnston

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 19:12

Single mom Bristol Palin wants her baby daddy to support their kid.
Specifically, that means she is angling for some of the money generated by the recent Levi Johnston nude Playgirl photos and subsequent media blitz.
Court documents filed by Bristol's lawyer Wednesday in Alaska demand $1,750 a month from Levi - retroactive to the birth of son Tripp on December 27, 2008.
According to the filing, Bristol Palin believes Levi pulled in "in excess of $105,000 in 2009 through various media interviews and modeling related activities."
In other words, peeps paid Levi Johnston to get naked! That's what he does.

Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin in happier, fake-engaged times.
Bristol says in a statement, "I have received limited and sporadic financial assistance from Levi." Bristol says Levi forked over only $4,400 over the 13 months of Tripp's existence - $3,000 on September 9, 2009, $1,400 on December 19.
Pretty weak, dude. Way to support your kid.
Bristol Palin is seeking temporary support for lil' Tripp, pending permanent child support. In the meantime, maybe hit up mom Sarah for some book royalties?

Mischa Barton Sued By Landlord For Unpaid Rent

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 19:01

Mischa Barton has really fallen on hard times these days. Pretty soon, that hooker outfit she donned for Law & Order: SVU may be her actual working attire.
Okay, we're exaggerating a little there. But a landlord really is saying the star is refusing to pay rent on her $7,000-a-month apartment in New York City.
Landlord M.R.A. Realties Inc. says in a lawsuit that Barton rebuffed efforts to collect the last three months' worth of rent in her Tribeca neighborhood pad.
The skinny actress' representatives had no immediate response. The landlord wants Barton to pay rent as well as legal fees incurred during the proceedings.

Mischa Barton has issues. Financial, not just mental!
The 23-year-old Barton also lives in Los Angeles. The lawsuit filed Thursday says that her one-year lease on the Manhattan apartment began in September 2009.
At the time, she was in The Beautiful Life, a CW series about the New York modeling world. The show was canceled in September after airing just two episodes.
Barton rose to fame playing Marissa Cooper on Fox's teen drama The OC. She's been looking extremely healthy and lucid ever since. Actually, quite the opposite.

Browse Flickr Photos Full Screen Sans Add-Ons [Flickr]

Submitted by admin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 19:00

You'll find no shortage of browser add-ons for the popular photo-sharing service Flickr, many of them focused on making the site more immersive. You can browse images in full screen with a simple hack however, no add-on necessary.Matt Haughey was never really happy with the interface at Flickr, it always seemed like he could never get the images as big as he wanted without excess fiddling and fighting with the interface. He increased the default image size but that wasn't enough. His solution relies on a clever mouse-less version of the slideshow:

1. From whatever page you access contact photos, a user's photostream, and/or a photoset, click on the slideshow link
2. As soon as the slideshow loads, hit the pause button on the lower left
3. Use your keyboard's left/right keys to navigate through the set of photos at full screen. If your mouse pointer isn't in the very top or very bottom of the browser, all slideshow chrome will fade in a couple seconds leaving you with giant photos on a clean crisp full browser display

We tested it out—see the screenshot above—and it is a quick and painless way to enjoy completely full screen images sans any visual clutter or downloading add-ons.
Have your own clever hacks for getting more out of services without resorting to using add-ons and Greasemonkey scripts as bandages? Let's hear about it in the comments.
